Why do you cap membership?
This is due to capacity restrictions at our venue. Some activities can be difficult with too many people!
Why are guest spaces capped?
Guest spaces, like member spaces, are capped because of venue capacity restrictions. Go to Eventbrite to get on the list.
What happens at meetings?
The main part of each meeting is a talk or activity or demonstration, preceded by WI business where we run through any announcements and outcomes of committee meetings. Tea and coffee are provided free of charge but feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks too.
Why do you go through business at the start of each meeting?
This is a traditional part of a WI meeting. Some groups no longer do this but we feel it's an important part of the organisation and we like to keep members up-to-date about what is happening in our group, in the South Yorkshire Federation, and nationally. Going through the business only takes 15-20 minutes so we think it's definitely worth it and adds structure to our meetings.
I want to suggest a speaker or activity for a future meeting, how can I do this?We plan our programme a year in advance so we already have everything organised for 2016, using a lot of member suggestions from 2015! We love to hear suggestions from members so if there is an activity you'd like to do or a speaker you'd like to hear we will try our best to arrange this for a future meeting. We don't like to repeat activities year on year as we like to give members something new so you can see a list of what we've done in past meetings here.
Do committee members get paid?Unfortunately not. The committee is made up of volunteers who give their time to the group freely (and still have to pay the same membership fees as every other member!).
How can I join the committee?
We accept new members to the committee each November. There will be details at meetings and in the member newsletter with more information nearer the time. In the meantime, we are always on the lookout for members to help us set up and clear away at meetings, as well as write our monthly meeting blog. Get in touch if you'd like to help!
How is SHWI funded?
The group is funded through membership fees, we receive no funding from anywhere else. We get to keep around 50% of the fees each member pays each year, the rest is paid to South Yorkshire Federation of Women's Institutes and the National Federation of Women's Institutes to cover insurance, WI Life subscriptions and other costs. Out of the membership fees we keep we have to pay for venue hire and speaker/activity costs for the year (which can be very challenging depending on what we're doing each month!). We also receive a small amount of money from the raffle we hold at meetings.
Does SHWI run any other groups?
Yes, we run a supper club, book club, walking group, running group, slimming group and amateur astronomy club which are open to members only. See the Spin Offs page for more information.
